St Elizabeth blessing Children

Adrian Ludwig Richter
1803 – Dresden – 1884

Watercolour with pencil and opaque white. Partly heightened in gold. Sheet size: 22.8 x 19 cm. Verso a landscape study.

Provenance: Ludwig Richter's grandson, Johannes Kretschmar, Lübeck (his collector's mark on an old passe-partout; not in Lugt); it has passed through inheritance to the last owner.

Finely executed, very detailed drawing. Colours very fresh.

According to an old reference, this work is a private drawing by Richter for his wife Auguste, in memory of a family outing in early August 1851, which also included daughter Aimée and the woodcutter Peter Gaber. The party left Leipzig for Eisenach for a few days walking. Our drawing has always remained in the Richter family.
