Eugène Carrière

1849 Gournay - Paris 1906

Oil on canvas. 38 x 46 cm. Exh. Cat. Kunsthalle Bremen. Clemens-Sels-Museum Neuss: Intimität der Gefühle. Eugène Carrière zum 100. Todestag, cat. no. 11.

Carrière received his first exhibition at the Gallery Bernheim Jeune in Paris in 1901and painted a family portrait in 1903 (Portrait de la famille J. et. G. Bernheim. Jean-René Carrière, Souveniers, lettres, etc., Private Edition, Paris n.d., p. 46). Several exhibitions followed after his death in 1917 and 1920.

Our painting is a preparatory study for the mentioned final version. It is still with the family of the sitter. The Bernheim brothers were very influential dealers and have been painted by some of their artists, among them Felix Vallotton (1901) and twice by Eduard Vuillard (1912).

We are grateful to Guy-Patrice Dauberville from the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, Paris, for letting us know the whereabouts of the final version of our painting.

Bought by a private collector, Germany.
