Seated Woman. Preparatory drawing for Idyll. 1873
Hans von Marées
1837 Elberfeld – 1887 Rome
Red chalk over brush and ink. Squared up in pencil. On laid paper with watermark ‘P’. Sheet size: 49.6 x 31.6 cm.
Important drawing connected to the ‘Naples frescoes’ (see Julius Meier Graefe, Hans von Marées, vol. II, p. 206 - 217) This drawing shows the female figure sitting in the right-hand corner of the drawing Idyll II (Meyer-Grafe, vol. II, p. 212, no. 243 with ill.)
“In 1873 Marées painted the library of the German zoological institute in Naples in collaboration with Adolph von Hildebrand. Marées is seen to best advantage in these frescoes, whose technique forced him to work very quickly. With these pictures begins his late working period; from that time Marées also became an excellent draugthsman.” (Helmut Börsch-Supan, Die Deutsche Malerei von Anton Graff bis Hans von Marées, Munich 1988, p. 487).
