Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1779 and of Mount Etna in 1766
Jean Bapstiste Chapuy
1760 – Paris – 1802
Two colour etchings, printed in wash manner on four plates after Alessandro D'anna (active in Naples and Palermo c.a. 1746 - after 1796). Sheet size: 75.5 x 52.8 cm. Not in Le Blanc, Nagler or IFF. Th.-B., vol. 1, p. 530 (D'anna).
Superb early and rich impression in fresh colour on all four plates. The prints are in untouched and fresh condition and with margins.
The pair is not recorded in general print literature and is extremely rare. Another pair is at the New York Public Library, printed in three colours (without the yellow plate).
Chapuy was an accomplished and prolific colour printmaker. His best-known work is Vue perspective du Champ de Mars...1790. (Le Blanc 16)
An exeptional example of these prints and as a pair of great rarity.
Bought by a private collector, UK.
