Selfportrait
Hermann Max Pechstein
1881 Zwickau – 1955 Berlin
Pen and ink. Sheet size: 32.5 x 23.5 cm. Signed with a monogram and dated 1917.
In early 1917 Pechstein was released from the battlefields and returned to his career as an artist. This forced interruption of almost three years meant that his productivity had come to a virtual standstill. Exhausted, traumatised by war and still haunted by memories of the war this portrait shows a man replete with anxiety for the future. (see Möller p. 57). Our drawing might be connected with a lost oil painting Self-portrait with Pipe of the same year (Möller p.62, ill. 34)
Bought by a private collector, Turkey.
