The Last Judgment
Peter de Jode I
1570 – Antwerp – 1634
Set of 12 engravings after Jean Cousin. Sheet size (assembled): ca. 175 x 130 cm. Watermark in all sheets: Grape in a circle. Hollstein 83.
After the painting of Jean Cousin in the Church of Vincennes.
The complete set of sheets with the three dedication plates. With the address of Peter Drevet.
All sheets are in evenly fine lifetime impressions. The sheets are not stitched together and show large paper margins. Our set is in its original condition, published in twelve single plates. The contemporary purchaser would have assembled the plates and probably also trimmed the paper margins.
Extremely rare, especially unmounted.
Possibly one of the first examples of a print composed of multiple plates. A milestone of reproductive printmaking.
There is a later edition of around 1750-1780 where the prints are published and bound into a folio album.
Bought by museum, Northern America.
