Nicole Wassall
Nicole Wassall has described her work, and indeed it can be viewed as, the conclusion to an argument - or at least a very long discussion - with herself.
As an Australian and English artist, she approaches her practice as a self-professed outsider, taking full advantage of the unique perspective this affords. Unwilling to pigeonhole herself into one artistic medium, she has taught herself a range of techniques. This magpie sensibility has evolved into a cross-disciplinary practice that bridges ancient traditions with conceptual inquiry.
James Payne (author of Great Art Explained) wrote that her work presents ‘contradictory details to challenge our visual habits, asking us to re-examine our presumptions and create new ones’.
Working across sculpture, etching, water gilding, silver smithery, video and more, Wassall navigates intricate territories where human belief, science, spirituality, absurdity and social systems collide. Her artwork can be humorous, serious, is usually curious and is always layered.
Wassall completed her MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London.
