Glasgow records 35 other known impressions. It was first published in an album of Cancelled Plates by the Fine Art Society, 1879.

 

The Storm was first exhibited in Whistler's first one-man exhibition in London in 1874. It was among the etchings selected for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 by Howard Mansfield (1849 - 1938). The site of the rainy scene is probably in the Thames valley, near Sunbury-on-Thames.
