Theodore Roussel
1847 Lorient – 1926 Hastings
Pink Seascape, c. 1910
Watercolour. Size of sheet: 17.5 x 25 cm.
Literature: Michael Parkin Gallery, London 1997, cat. no. 50.
Beautiful image of the sea, showing the skilled use of colour that Roussel became known and admired for. While there are links that can be made to James McNeill Whistler and Joseph Mallord William Turner, Roussel had a distinctly French style, developed from the early 19th century French Romantics, such as Eugène Delacroix and moving towards the works of Paul Huet and Camille Pissarro.
