Walter Richard Sickert
1860 Munich – 1942 Bath
Dieppe, La Rue Notre Dame, 1909
Etching and aquatint. Size of plate: c. 30.7 x 24 cm.
Literature: Bromberg 134.V/XVI, one of two recorded proofs in the fifth state.
Provenance: The Fine Art Society, London.
The narrow Rue Notre Dame in Dieppe was one of Sickert's favorite subjects, which he illustrated several times in both paintings and drawings, as in the earlier watercolor included in our exhibition (link). In representing the street view in this print, the artist explored the potential of "different techniques in the pursuit of intensely subtle tonal effects" (Bromberg 2000, p. 145).
